Hyères,
a medieval town
The name of the town has a
provencal ethymologie. Hyères is located in Southeast of France in a
region called Provence-Alpes-Côtes d'Azur and more precisely in a
departement called Var (83). This town is located on the mediteraneen
seaside. Hyères is also known as Hyères-Les-Palmiers bacause of the
imporatnt number of palm trees which grow in the city.
There
is 51 400 inhabitants in this town and they're called Hyèrois.
This
town has important remains of middle age. Today, you can visit the
castle, and its fortifications, several churchs and one
"commanderie", french term to speak about the place where the
"Templiers" (kind of knights) used to live.
In
this town, you will discover the typical architecture of the middle age
in the old narrow streets.
When tourism start to
develop in the XIXth century Hyères expend itself and grow out of the
fortifications and news buildings came out...
